Thanks to my few but reliable contacts, I was able to find out that a team from a Montreal institution, the H.E.C., received a mandate from the committee of the SAE to go interview people that could be called fractivists in Texas in February.

A similar team from the University of Montreal had received the same mandate at the end of 2012 to do much of the same thing here in Quebec. Here, people were to fill a written questionnaire.

Our first reaction, here in Quebec, was: "No way!". After consulting among our members and different citizens' committees all across Quebec, it was decided that we would not answer those questionnaires whose information would probably only feed a report issued by a committee that is far from being neutral and can be easily pressured by the industry, which industry did not hesitate to say they could hardly wait to see what recommendations this report would bring forward!

Let's recall that the SAE on shale gas does not have the mandate to determine if fracking is an acceptable method of extraction here in the populated and agricultural St. Lawrence Valley! This Strategic Environmental Assessment Committee is only looking for a way to do it in a socially acceptable way, which is an impossible feat by any stretch of the imagination!

In Texas, it seems that the interviews will be done orally and be recorded.

We understand that some people in Texas are more used to having drilling rigs in the middle of town or in their backyard, but there are still some of them that work hard to make the industry work more responsibly and get legal protection for the people and the water for years now!

It would be hard for us to tell the people of Texas to not answer those questions from these students: their answers will only help feed the SAE report on shale gas here in Quebec! Do they know that we only have about 30 fracked shale gas wells here, and that most of them leak already?

I'm so insulted to know now that some of our students in Montreal will travel down to Texas to gather information that could then be used against us, here, in Quebec.

UPDATE:

To make things even more confusing, I've just learned about this: "State Rep. Ken King (R-Canadian) has been named a member of the newly created House Energy Caucus (HEC), a legislative caucus of the Texas House of Representatives, to focus on energy production and the issues facing adjacent communities. "

I'm afraid the people of Texas will think the people from Montreal are part of this new body in Texas.
